What can I drive with a Class BE license?

With a Class BE license, you may drive a Class B towing vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer if the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating is more than 750 kg but no more than 3,500 kg.

This makes the BE driver’s license particularly useful for larger trailers, horse trailers, RVs, or cargo trailers. If you’re not sure whether BE or B96 is right for your vehicle combination, we’ll work with you to figure it out.

Technical Basis: Class BE applies to a Class B towing vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 750 kg and up to a maximum of 3,500 kg.

Who should consider BE?

A BE license is especially worthwhile for anyone who wants to travel with a larger trailer. If the combination of car and trailer requires more power or a B96 license is no longer sufficient, a BE license gives you more flexibility on the road and keeps you on the safe side.

Anyone who transports horses needs to feel confident behind the wheel of their vehicle and trailer. With BE training, you’ll practice typical situations such as taking turns, braking, maneuvering, and backing up—so you can move your vehicle and trailer calmly and in a controlled manner.
BE is also the right choice for transporting trailers, vehicle trailers, or larger trailers in everyday life. Whether for personal, recreational, or professional use, a BE license gives you significantly more versatility on the road.

Here's How the BE Training Program Works

The BE training program focuses on practical experience with a trailer. You’ll learn how a vehicle combination behaves in traffic, what to watch out for when turning, and how to maintain control while maneuvering or backing up. Our goal is not only for you to successfully complete the training, but also for you to feel confident driving with a trailer in everyday situations.

We’ll show you how to maneuver the trailer smoothly and stay calm even in tight situations. This will help you get a better feel for the length, lane position, and handling of the vehicle combination.

You’ll practice realistic trailer scenarios in traffic and learn how to turn, accelerate, and brake with confidence, as well as how to drive the combination safely.

This training prepares you to drive safely with a trailer even after you’ve completed driver’s ed—whether it’s a travel trailer, horse trailer, or cargo trailer.

Who should consider B96?

The B96 is particularly useful if you’re traveling with a trailer and your combination weighs more than is permitted for a Class B vehicle.
The B96 can also be a good choice for garden trailers, small utility trailers, or hobby trailers if your combination exceeds the 3,500 kg limit.
Even if your vehicle and trailer combination technically meets the requirements, this training will help you drive, assess, and maneuver your trailer more safely.

Here's how the B96 training works

According to the BMV, obtaining the B96 designation does not require a traditional driver’s license exam, but rather driver training. With us, you’ll learn how to drive safely with a trailer, maneuver, and better assess typical traffic situations. The goal is not only for you to obtain the formal license extension but also to feel truly confident driving your vehicle and trailer combination.

You’ll get a concise and practical explanation of the most important basics of driving with a trailer.
We practice driving, maneuvering, and assessing the vehicle combination.

You’ll learn what to watch out for when braking, turning, backing up, and driving longer combinations.

BE or B96—which one do you need?

Whether BE or B96 is right for you depends on the gross vehicle weight rating of your towing vehicle and trailer. B96 is sufficient for certain vehicle combinations weighing over 3,500 kg up to a maximum of 4,250 kg. BE is the right choice if you want to tow larger trailers—such as horse trailers, larger travel trailers, or cargo trailers.

If you’re unsure, just check your specific trailer combination with us. We’ll let you know which extension makes sense for you.

B96 is not a separate driver’s license class, but rather a code associated with Class B. It applies to vehicle combinations weighing between 3,500 kg and a maximum of 4,250 kg; registration requires driver training, not a test.
